Phonetics is the branch of linguistics that studies the sounds of human speech.

There are two kinds of phonetics:

  • Articulatory phonetics deals with how sounds are produced by the human speech organs.
  • Acoustic phonetics studies the properties of the sounds themselves and how they're perceived.

Not to be confused with phonology, which is the study of how these sounds are used as part of a language system.
